Karen is a Colorado native, growing up in Pueblo. She received her undergraduate degree from USC, now known as CSU-Pueblo. Her nursing background is critical care. She continues to maintain her national certifications in Critical Care (CCRN), Emergency Nursing (CEN), and Flight Nursing (CFRN).

Karen is double boarded in Family Practice (FNP-BC) and Acute Care (ACNP-BC). She is an Associate of The American College of Cardiology (AACC), the Nurse Practitioner equivalent of a Fellowship for Physicians. She is Nationally Certified (CRTT) and a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT). She has a special interest in health promotion and cardiopulmonary disease management.​

Karen has two children and enjoys most any outdoor activity.
